The Portrait
January, 2014
Theatre 54, New York
Sarah Levine Simon's THE PORTRAIT is a new comedy of manners—a highfaluting madcap caper, satirizing the war between the haves and the have-nots!
Marty Finklestein, a struggling theater director, has been bequeathed THE PORTRAIT of his 18th Century Jewish ancestor. Over pate and crepes, at a dinner hosted by his wealthy cousin Toddy Renard, antics by the French maid Honore, high notes from Marty’s singer wife Alissa, and pretentions about their early American Jewish roots, a wager is made as to who will buy THE PORTRAIT.
The production stars Rutanya Alda (Film: The Deer Hunter) as Honore, Jessica Eleanor Grant (As The World Turns) as Alissa, James Leaf (Catastrophe, Young Mechanics Ensemble) as Marty, Caitlin O’Heaney (Bdwy: A Matter of Gravity) as Helen, Roger Hendricks Simon (Film: Wall Street, Money Never Sleeps) as Henry, June Stein (Film: Romance & Cigarettes) as Agnes and James Williams (OBR: Brothers Karamazov Part I) as Toddy.
The production features scenic design by David Bragin and Josie Williams, costume design by Josie Williams, and lighting design by Emma Schimminger.
